New Delhi: Former India cricketer Zaheer Khan is reportedly in talks with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to take up the role of the team’s mentor. As per a Cricbuzz report, if things go well, Zaheer could fill in the void left by the departure of Gautam Gambhir and Morne Morkel, two key figures of LSG in their recent past.

Gambhir donned the LSG kit as their mentor while Morkel acted as the bowling coach and Zaheer is reportedly eyeing both roles ahead of the next season. Gambhir left for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2023 and coached the team to a title triumph in IPL 2024 earlier this year. He, however, left the franchise to join Team India as their head coach for the next three years.

Meanwhile, Morkel had served for LSG as their bowling coach for three seasons and is now set to join the Indian cricket team. He was recently named as India’s bowling coach by the BCCI.

Nonetheless, Zaheer’s name surfaced not only for the mentor role but also to help guide the bowlers of LSG. Zaheer is well-known for his India exploits and boasts vast experience. He was previously considered for Team India’s bowling coach position as well under the “new Gautam Gambhir era,” however, the BCCI went with Morkel, highly likely on the recommendation of Gambhir.

LSG’s coaching setup

The Super Giants currently have Justin Langer as their head coach who leads the staff including Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes. If the deal materialises, the addition of Zaheer will be highly beneficial for the KL Rahul-led side. The coaching setup would undoubtedly become all the more strengthful. LSG narrowly missed the playoffs last season but might see changes in their fate if the management is successful in roping Zaheer ahead of another competitive IPL season.
