LMD slaps Rs 1 lakh fine on Delhi-based food manufacturer – Kashmir Reader
SRINAGAR: The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) during its routine market inspection held in Srinagar District booked a Delhi based Frozen Food Manufacturer which was found distributing pre-packaged food items in Lal Bazar, Srinagar in contravention of the Legal Metrology norms.
The inspection team of Legal Metrology Department, found the items without mandatory declarations like MRP, Unit Sale price, Net Weight etc. which is a violation under Rule 6(1)(e) & Rule 6(11) of Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities Rules, 2011. The department seized all unlawful packages which included Chicken Meat Balls and Chicken Seekh Kababs.
The Delhi based company acknowledged the lapse and a case was compounded under section 48 of Legal Metrology Act 2009 against a payment of Rs.01 lakh by Deputy Controller, Consumer Protection Kashmir after an undertaking was submitted by the manufacturer that such offence will not be repeated in future.
The swift administrative action and the manufacturer’s acceptance of responsibility underscore the regulatory framework’s role in consumer protection and market fairness.
Directions for such consistent market checking campaigns were issued to the field executives of the department by Controller, Legal Metrology J&K Govt., Majid Khalil Drabu to serve the consumer interest.
Awareness is being created by Legal Metrology Department about the importance of adhering to legal standards for packaged commodities.
