Breaking News Live Updates, 20 August 2024 Latest News Today: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Jammu and Srinagar on August 21 and 22 for key meetings in preparation for the upcoming assembly elections. The visit comes after Congress president Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met general secretaries, in-charges and screening committee members of four poll-bound states on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that the Kolkata rape-murder case raises safety issues for doctors across the country. “We are deeply concerned about the fact that the name, photo and video clip of the Kolkata rape victim was published all over. The law prohibits publishing victims’ names. Is this the way we provide dignity to the young doctor who has lost her life?” the top court observed. It also slammed the former principal of the hospital, Sandip Ghosh, for trying to pass off the incident as suicide and asked why the parents were not allowed to see the body.

We must increase our collaboration in new technological areas such as semiconductor, fintech, defence industry, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and quantum,” PM Modi added.

    Notification issued for first phase of polls in J-K

    The Election Commission on Tuesday issued notification for the first phase of the three-phased assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir in which 24 segments will go to polls on September 18. The last date for making nominations for the first phase is August 27, while the scrutiny of the nominations will take place on August 28. The last date for the withdrawal of candidature is August 30 and the date of poll, if necessitated, is September 18.

    In the first phase, 16 assembly segments in the valley that are in south Kashmir and eight in Jammu region will go to polls. The seats are Pampore, Tral, Pulwama, Rajpora, Zainapora, Shopian, D H Pora, Kulgam, Devsar, Dooru, Kokernag (ST), Anantnag West, Anantnag, Srigufwara-Bijbehara, Shangus-Anantnag East, and Pahalgam in the Kashmir valley. Inderwal, Kishtwar, Padder-Nagseni, Bhadarwah, Doda, Doda West, Ramban, and Banihal will go to polls in Jammu region.

    SC forms 10-member task force to formulate national protocol for ensuring safety, facilities for doctors

    The Supreme Court constituted a 10-member National Task Force to formulate national protocol for ensuring safety and facilities for doctors. The panel includes Surgeon Vice Admiral RK Sarin, doctor Nageshwar Reddy, managing director of Asian Institute of National Gastrology among others. The SC directs the task force to submit an interim report within 3 weeks and the final report within two months. “The task force shall look into safety and other issues and consider to prepare action plan relating to prevent gender-based violence, dignified working space for interns, resident, non-resident doctors,” the SC said.

    The Supreme Court remarked that as more and more women join the workforce, the nation cannot wait for another rape case for things to change on the ground. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud Singh noted existing enactments do not address institutional safety standards for doctors and medical workers. The top court said that the brutality of the sexual assault have shocked the conscience. “If women are not able to go to work and working conditions are not safe, we are denying them equality Most young doctors are putting in 36 hours, we must evolve national protocol to ensure safe conditions of work,” it observed.

    SC raps West Bengal govt over delay in filing FIR in rape-murder case, asks what were hospital authorities doing

    The Supreme Court pulled up the West Bengal government over delay in filing FIR in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case and asked what were hospital authorities doing. “It appears crime was detected in early hours, medical college principal tried to pass it off as suicide,” the apex court said. The court further said that the power of the West Bengal government should not be unleashed on protestors, adding that its time of national catharsis.

    The apex court directed the West Bengal government to file status report by August 22 on progress of probe into mob attack on RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The SC also slammed the Kolkata Police, and asked how mob of thousands entered the hospital. It also asked how was Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar hospital, Sandip Ghosh was appointed to another college immediately when his conduct was under scrutiny.

    Monitoring of entry-exit, escort to women doctors among security measures for central hospitals

    The Union Health Ministry on Monday issued a list of security measures to be implemented at all central government hospitals which include strict monitoring of the entry and exit and providing escort to women health professionals at night. The move comes amid nationwide protests over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata.

    In a communication, the ministry asked heads of central government hospitals to ensure adequate number of well secured duty rooms with basic amenities for female health professionals and deployment of women health professionals at night be preferably done in more than one in number. They should be escorted in premises while on duty and proper arrangement of secured transport should be made for them for any movement at night.
