Leh family trip turns nightmare for Chennai man. He has a warning for others

A Chennai man’s trip to Ladakh turned into a nightmarish experience for him and his family, forcing them to cut short their visit and head back home.Kirubakaran Rajendran took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his experience.

“I went on a ten-day family trip to Ladakh, what was supposed to be an adventure trip turned into a nightmare,” he wrote.

Rajendran said he wanted to go there “because of low light pollution that lets you do stargazing where even the Milky Way is clearly visible with the naked eye.”

He did research, and to see all the important places like Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tsomoriri Lake, Lamayuru, and Hanle, he decided to go for a 10-day trip to Leh.

Considering Leh’s high altitude, he even took Diamox tablets, which help in acclimatization. “We also decided to stay in Leh city for two days before exploring other places. We were mentally well-prepared for what to expect once we landed in Leh,” Rajendran wrote in the Twitter thread.

But their problems started soon after landing in Leh.

“Initially, I found it hard to breathe. I thought maybe it was due to the flight travel, but my kid also complained the same,” he narrated.

Rajendran said he expected such initial issues and hence did not panic. “I thought once we took rest and drank ample water, everything would be alright after a day or two. So the first day, we didn’t do anything, just chilled at our hostel rooftop,” he wrote.

But breathing issues persisted even after two days. “My ten-year-old kid found it really hard to breathe. His oximeter reading went below 65. All three of us couldn’t eat well, and he started vomiting whatever he ate, making his body totally weak,” he added in the post.

They then decided to head back to Chennai. “As soon as we landed in Chennai, miraculously all three of us were absolutely fine. No breathing issues, no dizziness. Our bodies were in high alert mode when we were at high altitude due to the oxygen issue, but the moment we landed back, our bodies adapted quickly,” Rajendran added.

Rajendran, however, was all praise for Leh’s picturesque landscape and breathtaking views.

He advised others to be well-prepared for a Ladakh trip before the journey. “Anticipate all the worst-case scenarios. Ladakh is so beautiful, no doubt about it, but it might not suit everyone,” he cautioned.
