Lawyer arrested for instigating woman to attempt self-immolation outside CM’s residence in Lucknow

According to police investigations, the woman was advised by her own lawyer to take this drastic step. The lawyer assured her that self-immolation would solve her problem. This information surfaced when the police retrieved the woman’s mobile phone and discovered a recorded conversation between her and the lawyer.

Lucknow: A shocking discovery has been made in the case of a woman who tried to die by suicide outside the chief minister’s residence in Lucknow. As per police investigations, the woman was told to take the step by her own lawyer. The lawyer had promised the woman that self-immolation would resolve her issue. The revelation came to light after police seized the woman’s mobile phone, which contained a recorded conversation between the woman and her lawyer.

Acting on the new evidence, police conducted a raid in Unnao and arrested the lawyer accused of inciting the woman to attempt suicide. Police reports said that the woman had sought legal action against the SHO of Purva police station in Unnao under the SC/ST Act and had consulted her lawyer regarding the matter. The lawyer allegedly devised a plan for self-immolation and instructed the woman to attend Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s public hearing on Wednesday. On the lawyer’s advice, the woman went to the CM’s residence.

Woman suffers 90% burns

Immediately after exiting the public hearing, the woman doused herself in petrol and set herself ablaze, resulting in severe burns covering 90 per cent of her body. She is currently undergoing treatment at KGMU hospital, where her condition is critical. A chilling call recording retrieved from the woman’s mobile phone reveals the lawyer’s explicit instructions, including guidance on where to obtain petrol and how to transport it.

Police probe recording

DCP Central Raveena Tyagi of Lucknow said that the call recording discovered on Anjali’s mobile phone is currently under investigation. The 60-year-old lawyer Sunil Kumar, who allegedly incited Anjali to attempt self-immolation, has been taken into custody. Kumar, who is from the same village as Anjali, is accused of instigating the incident.

‘Make a scene and falsely claim castiest slurs’

According to the investigation, the accused lawyer instigated the woman over the phone, saying, ‘You want action against the SHO, right? Action will be taken, but you need to make a scene. This will not only get the SHO’s attention but also the CO’s.’

The lawyer further instructed the woman to falsely claim that the police used casteist slurs against her, promising that this would entitle her to compensation under the SC-ST Act. The police have found a total of 57 phone conversations between the woman and the lawyer between July 30 and August 6, in which he consistently goaded her into taking drastic action, repeatedly suggesting that self-harm was necessary to achieve justice.
