Lakshman Prasad Acharya sworn in as Assam Governor, Vijayashankar as Meghalaya Governor

Guwahati: While Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been sworn in as the 32nd Governor of Assam at a swearing in ceremony held in Guwahati, Former Karnataka Minister Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar was sworn-in as the new Governor of Meghalaya on Tuesday at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in Shillong.Chief Justice Gauhati High Court Justice Vijay Bishnoi administered the oath of office to the new Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

Acharya was born on 3rd October 1954 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Acharya is a Sahitya Ratna (Hindi) who is known for his contributions to education and public service. He started his career in his own hometown as a teacher in 1973 at Bhartiya Shishu Mandir in Ramnagar, Varanasi.

On June 22, 1977, he initiated the Child Education in the Village campaign with the sole aim of establishing schools in the remotest villages. He established institutions of learning, such as Sishu Shiksha Niketan and Shri Kalidas Shiksha Sansthan Junior High School, in 33 far-flung locales. His efforts extended to even more distant areas in Madhya Pradesh.

Furthermore, his dedication to education led to the creation of Smt. Pyari Devi Intermediate College.
In 1990, Lakshman Prasad Acharya took his first step into politics by becoming the divisional president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Ramnagar area of Varanasi. This marked the beginning of his active political journey. In 1995, he assumed the role of General Secretary for the combined district of Varanasi, which included Varanasi and Chandauli.

In 1996, Acharya’s political journey led him to become the District President of the BJP for the Varanasi district. He was also the chairman of Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Development Corporation (UPFDC).

In 2015, Acharya was elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC). In recognition of his devoted service and contributions, he was re-elected for a second term as a Member of the UP Legislative Council in 2021. He continued to represent the interests of the people in this capacity until his appointment as the Governor of Sikkim on 16th February 2023. Hereafter he continued to serve in Sikkim until his appointment as the Governor of Assam and additional charge of the Governor of Manipur.

The newly appointed Governor of Meghalaya CH Vijayashankar said he would take everybody into confidence and focus on development of the state.
The Governor was addressing the media following his oath-taking ceremony, “I take everybody into confidence here. Not only the government, not only bureaucracy. I have no personal agenda here, including politics.” He added, “Development of the state is going to be the main focus.”
