Kolkata rape-murder case: A major revelation has been made in the case of rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. Police have said that on the night when the crime was committed, the accused had gone to the red light area in Kolkata. The accused had also consumed alcohol there.

Doctors from various cities went on strike in protest against the incident.

Kolkata: Kolkata Police have revealed that Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape and murder of trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, visited the Sonagachi red-light area on the night of the crime (August 8). He also consumed alcohol before the tragic incident. 

The police had arrested Roy based on CCTV footage that captured him entering and leaving the seminar hall where the junior doctor was sleeping. Her body was later found in the same hall.

CBI investigating the case

The incident has sparked outrage across the country. Doctors from various cities went on strike in protest against the incident. After a High Court order, the investigation was transferred to the CBI, which is currently working on uncovering the details of the case. 

Supreme Court also took suo motu cognizance of the matter and formed a task force to ensure the safety of doctors at their workplaces.

Several officers suspended

Headed by Admiral Aarti Sareen, the Director General of Medical Services for the Navy, the 10-member task force will submit its recommendations to Supreme Court within two months. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra is overseeing the case.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police faced criticism for their handling of the situation during a peaceful protest at RG Kar Medical College on the night of August 14 and 15. Several senior officers were suspended, including two Assistant Commissioners and an Inspector, for not taking appropriate action. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against them.
