SRINAGAR: The resident doctors of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar and its Associated Hospitals will join the nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in response to the brutal rape and murder of a resident doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, on  August 9.

Starting from 6:00 am on August 17, the doctors will suspend elective services, including OPDs, wards, and elective OTs. However, emergency services, emergency OTs, and ICUs will remain operational.

The doctors have outlined their key demands, which include the urgent dispensation of justice for the accused in the case, implementation of the Central Protection Act, and immediate enhancement of security measures at GMC Srinagar and its Associated Hospitals. These measures should involve the 24×7 deployment of security personnel at all hospital checkpoints, indoor wards, and OTs, enforcement of a gate pass system for attendants, and institutional FIRs in cases of violence against medical staff on duty.

The resident doctors also condemned the brutal incident in Kolkata and the inadequate investigation and violence that followed, describing it as a tragedy not just for the medical community but for society at large. They called on the administration of GMC Srinagar to support their cause and join them in their peaceful protest.
