Kolkata rape-murder: Top RG Kar hospital officials, including new principal, sacked amid ongoing protests

Just six days after taking over the post, the new principal of RG Kar Medical college and Hospital in India’s Kolkata has been sacked. On Wednesday (August 21), the West Bengal government sacked Dr Surhita Paul along with the hospital superintendent and the HoD of the chest department after students protesting against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital marched towards the health department headquarters.

Protesters’ demands

As per a PTI report, the protesting doctors raised their demands in a meeting with department officials at the Health Department headquarters.

“Our newly-appointed principal, Dr Surhita Pal, has gone missing. She is supposed to be our guardian, but she has not turned up at the campus since the night the hospital was vandalised. We have heard that she is operating out of Swasthya Bhavan. So we are headed there to find her out,” said a junior doctor participant of the rally.

The protesters demanded that people on all administrative posts, like Medical Superintendent Cum Vice Principal (MSVP) and Principal, be changed.

Sandip Ghosh’s new appointment cancelled

As per the report, the West Bengal Health Department also removed RG Kar’s former principal, Sandip Ghosh, from his new appointment as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College.

Trouble continues to mount for Sandip Ghosh. CBI which was handed the probe into the heinous incident on Tuesday (Aug 13) has now grilled him for the sixth consecutive day.

Previously, senior Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh reportedly submitted to the CBI documents related to the corruption of Dr Sandip Ghosh.

The TMC leader claimed that junior doctors of the hospital have supplied all the information and documents related to Ghosh’s corruption. He also said that if CBI finds these documents necessary, the doctors will be happy to cooperate with the agency.

“I have handed over to CBI all the documents given to me by the doctors of RG Kar Hospital…If before August 23 a breakthrough is reached, then it is better as the arrested accused is presented before the court on that day, then the remand copy will indicate he was the lone culprit or not,” said Kunal Ghosh.

While there are no new arrests in the case, the CBI continues with its questioning of top officials of the RG Kar Hospital.
