Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: The newly-appointed principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was removed from her post following a protest by students against her appointment.

According to reports, Suhrita Paul, who was recently appointed the principal of the institution following the August 9 rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, was shunted out by authorities after students protested against her appointment to the post.

A students delegation met officials at the Swasthya Bhavan on Wednesday and demanded the removal of Paul from her post.

Earlier, the students, doctors, and paramedical staff of the hospital staged a protest march from CGO Complex (CBI office) to Swasthya Bhavan to press their demand for the removal of Suhrita Paul as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Medics protest against new RG Kar principal

Senior doctors, nurses and medics-in-training from across medical colleges of the state, numbering a few thousand, conducted a march to the state health department headquarters, Swasthya Bhavan, and laid siege to the premises till representatives of protestors met the department’s top officials and submitted a memorandum on Wednesday afternoon.

“Our newly-appointed principal Dr Suhrita Pal has gone missing. She is supposed to be our guardian but she has not turned up at the campus since the night the hospital was vandalised. We have heard that she is operating out of Swasthya Bhavan. So we are headed there to find her out,” PTI quoted a junior as saying.

Coming out of the meeting, the protesting doctors said they were “deeply disappointed” with the demeanour of the officials, PTI reported.

“We did not come here to seek justice. We came here to tell the government it should immediately remove all hospital authorities who were in charge of administration on the night of that crime and ensure they do not get to serve administrative positions ever again. But the health authorities couldn’t ensure that. They looked helpless before invisible higher powers,” said a doctor.

CBI grills former principal Ghosh

Meanwhile, the CBI grilled former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh for the sixth consecutive day and also summoned various other top authorities of the hospital, including its current superintendent and vice-principal Bulbul Mukhopadhyay and her predecessor Sanjay Vasishth, for questioning.

Mukhopadhyay previously served as the dean of student affairs.

Sources said a day before the agency was supposed to submit its investigation progress report to the Supreme Court on Thursday, investigators were trying to crosscheck a bunch of “inconsistencies” found in Ghosh’s statements, the PTI report said.
