The central government on Wednesday requested the deployment of paramilitary forces at R G Kar Hospital in Kolkata, according to official sources cited by PTI.

This comes as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continued its probe into the alleged rape and murder of a young doctor on the hospital premises. Former principal of R G Kar Hospital, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was questioned for the sixth day straight and may undergo a polygraph test, PTI reported.

Meanwhile, healthcare services across West Bengal remain disrupted as junior doctors continued their strike for the 13th consecutive day. Senior doctors were asked to step in, with state officials urging the striking medics to return to work. The body of a trainee woman doctor, bearing severe injury marks, was discovered inside the seminar hall of R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. The following day, Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer for his suspected involvement in the case.
