Kolkata Metro to introduce ‘no booking counter stations’ on Purple and Orange lines from August 1 – Check full list of stations – Infrastructure News
Kolkata Metro is set to launch a new pilot project, introducing “No Booking Counter Stations” on the Purple and Orange Lines starting August 1, 2024. This initiative was announced by Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer of Metro Railway. It aims to streamline operations at stations with relatively low passenger traffic.
The pilot project will initially cover three stations: Taratala and Sakherbazar on the Purple Line, and Kavi Sukanta on the Orange Line.
List of stations and details
Taratala station has an average daily passenger count of only 70, while Kavi Sukanta sees around 220 passengers daily. Sakherbazar station records approximately 55 daily passengers. The decision to designate these stations as “No Booking Counter Stations” is driven by their low footfall.

Transition to automated ticketing
From August 1, 2024, these stations will no longer have booking counters for issuing tokens, new Smart Cards, or recharging existing Smart Cards. Instead, passengers will use Automatic Smart Card Recharge Machines (ASCRM) for these services.
Each of the three stations will be equipped with two ASCRM machines, which have already been installed. These machines will facilitate the purchase of tokens, Smart Cards, and QR code-based tickets, and will also support UPI payment options for added convenience.
Enhanced passenger experience
The introduction of ASCRM machines is expected to enhance the commuting experience by providing a user-friendly, efficient alternative to traditional booking counters.
The Metro Railway Authorities believe this automated system will be well-received and are optimistic about its future acceptance among passengers.
The authorities will closely monitor the responses from passengers and gather feedback over the next six months. This period will be crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of the new system and making any necessary adjustments based on user experience.
A review of the pilot project will be conducted after six months to assess its success and determine further actions.
