Healthcare services at state-run hospitals in West Bengal remained crippled on Saturday as junior doctors continued their 16-day strike over the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began lie detection tests on the main accused, Sanjay Roy, in prison, and six others, including former principal Sandip Ghosh and four doctors, at its Kolkata office.

Here are the top 10 developments surrounding the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case:

-The alleged rape-murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, whose body was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical and Hospital on August 9, has sparked widespread outrage both in India and internationally. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested for his alleged involvement. The CBI took over the investigation from Kolkata Police last week following a Calcutta High Court order.

-Junior doctors in West Bengal continued their strike for the 16th consecutive day on Saturday, severely affecting healthcare services at state-run hospitals to protest the medic death case. Senior doctors attended to patients at the emergency services at government hospitals. On Friday, the Supreme Court had appealed to the protesting doctors to resume work and that it was issuing necessary directions to ensure their safety.

-The CBI began polygraph tests on former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and five others. Tests on key accused Sanjay Roy were postponed due to technical issues but are expected to be rescheduled soon. A CBI source said the test on Roy may be held on Sunday at the Presidency Correctional Home, where he is currently lodged, reports PTI.

-The CBI also interrogated over 15 people, including 10 police officers and civic volunteers, as part of the ongoing investigation into the case.

-Meanwhile, the West Bengal school education department issued showcause notices to three schools for involving students in a protest rally during school hours, violating regulations. The schools were given 24 hours to respond to the notices.

-CPI(M) student, youth, and women wings organised a rally protesting notices issued to their leaders in connection with vandalism at RG Kar Medical College. They led the march from College Street to Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar. Police put up barricades to halt the march midway.

-Over 200 alumni of Jadavpur University rallied from the campus to Golpark, demanding a swift investigation, arrests, and a fast-track trial.

-Further, approximately 300 app-based cab drivers in Kolkata staged a rally on Saturday, protesting the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor. Organized by the Leftist trade union CITU, the drivers marched from Rashbehari Crossing to Esplanade, displaying messages and red flags on their vehicles.

-The CBI has opened an investigation into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. This follows the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the West Bengal government. The CBI will now handle both the rape-murder case and financial irregularities.

-Earlier in the day, a team of senior state health department officials visited the hospital to meet the protesting junior doctors and urge them to resume work.
