The Kolkata police has arrested a second-year B.Com student for allegedly sharing a “provocative social media post” against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

According to police, the student is accused of inciting hatred and promoting violence by allegedly encouraging individuals to assassinate the CM.

A complaint was received about a student who posted three Instagram stories related to the rape and murder case at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, allegedly revealing the victim’s name and identity, police said.

Additionally, the accused reportedly shared two stories containing offensive comments and threats against the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Kolkata police officials stated that an investigation into the matter is currently underway, The Indian Express reported.

The student has been charged under sections 351(2), 353(1), and 352 of the BNS Act, which address intentional insults with the intent to provoke a breach of peace, and sections 72 and 79, which pertain to words, gestures, and actions intended to insult a woman’s modesty.

In addition, the Kolkata police have issued notices to seven SFI-DYFI leaders for questioning regarding their involvement in sharing information related to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case. Another notice has been sent to a doctor for allegedly providing misleading information. They are required to appear on Monday.

The police have also notified two prominent doctors and a senior BJP leader, asking them to report to the police headquarters as part of their investigation into the unlawful disclosure of the victim’s identity and the spread of misinformation on social media.

The police have sent notices to about 65 people in connection with the rape-murder case. Some are being investigated for revealing the victim’s identity, while others are being looked into for spreading misinformation. This is part of the police’s efforts to tackle both the leak of sensitive information and false information about the case.
