Kolkata: Days after a body of a woman doctor was found inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, leading to protests, the state government transferred the superintendent of the hospital over allegations of lapses leading to rape and murder of the 31-year-old victim.

State Government issues statement

The statement issued by the Director of Medical Education, Government of West Bengal, read, “Professor Dr. Sanjay Vashisth now employed as MSVP, RG Kar Medical College to act until further order as a Professor in the Department of Physiology, Calcutta National Medical College, Kolkata, and Prof. Dr Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, now employed as Professor, of Physiology, at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital to act until further order as MSVP RGkar Medical College.”

Meanwhile, post-graduate trainees, junior doctors, and other staff members of government hospitals demanded more strict actions from the CM Mamata Banerjee-led Government affecting services across the state. The protests led to cancellations of offs and holidays of senior doctors of government hospitals in the state.

Medical students ask the government to make post-mortem reports public

The medical students have also asked the state government to make public the post-mortem report of the victim and also the footage of the CCTV that is installed near the seminar hall where the incident reportedly took place. On Saturday, the police took a civic volunteer, who used to frequently visit the hospital, into custody in the case.

The protesting doctors have found support from various corners of the country with the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of India (FORDA) extending its support for the ongoing strike. The federation has also called for a halt of elective services in hospitals on Monday across the country.
