The Supreme Court has urged the doctors on strike to return to work. It has also said that no action will be taken against the doctors who went on strike. The Supreme Court on Thursday resumed hearing the cases related to the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Central Bureau of Investigation has been asked to file a status report on the investigation of the case today.

While hearing the case, the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud pulled up the West Bengal government and criticized the role of the Bengal Police as well as the former principal of the medical college, Sandip Kumar Ghosh. The bench also questioned Ghosh’s role and said that it seems that an attempt was made to present the murder as a suicide.

Let us tell you that the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Kolkata and constituted a 10-member National Task Force (NTF) on Tuesday. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra, while pronouncing its order, said that this task force will look into the safety, well-being and other related matters of medical professionals.

This task force monitored by the apex court will prepare a national protocol to ensure the safety of medical professionals. Apart from well-known senior doctors of the country, many prominent senior officials of the government will be ex-officio members of this task force.

The members of the NTF will include Surgeon Vice Admiral R Sarin, Dr. D Nageswara Reddy, Dr. M Srinivas, Dr. Pratima Murthy, Dr. Goverdhan Dutt Puri, Dr. Saumitra Rawat, Professor Anita Saxena, Head Cardiology, AIIMS Delhi, Professor Pallavi Sapre, Dean Grant Medical College Mumbai, Dr Padma Shrivastava, Department of Neurology, AIIMS, National. Cabinet Secretary to Government of India, Home Secretary to Government of India, Secretary to Union Health Ministry, Chairman of National Medical Commission, Chairman of National Board of Examiners will be its ex-officio members.

The apex court on Tuesday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as well as the West Bengal government to submit separate investigation progress reports into the horrific incident that took place in Kolkata by August 22. The bench had directed the CBI, which is investigating the case, to submit the progress report of the investigation to the court by August 22, 2024.
