Kolkata Doctor Rape And Murder: The CBI, which is probing the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata, Thursday conducted polygraph tests on two private guards of the city’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the crime was perpetrated on August 9.

Officials said the polygraph tests on the two guards were carried out after the two consented to the exercise before a Kolkata court which also gave its nod to the tests, adding the tests were concluded by the evening.

The total number of individuals put through polygraph tests in the case is now 10, including arrested accused Sanjay Roy, former principal of the medical college Sandip Ghosh, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Kolkata Police Anup Dutta, four doctors who were on duty with the victim on the fateful night, and a civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police, to get further leads about the crime.

Notably, the information revealed during a polygraph test cannot not be used as evidence during the trial but the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) might gather corroborative evidence that could be used in court, according to officials.

A polygraph test can help assess inaccuracies in the statements of suspects and witnesses. By monitoring their psychological responses, heart rate, breathing pattern, sweating and blood pressure, investigators can determine if there are discrepancies in their responses.

Kolkata doctor rape-murder

Earlier this month, on the morning of August 9,  a 31-year-old trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal capital Kolkata, triggering mass outrage and widespread protests across the country.

The medic’s body was found in a bloodied state in the hospital’s seminar room, leading to the arrest of the accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, who was an outsider frequenting the hospital premises.

The ghastly nature of the crime has sparked protests nationwide protests from medics across the country, bringing medical services, as hundreds of doctors remain on strike under different banners demanding safety of medics through a central law.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which started its investigation on August 14.
