Kolkata doctor murder: Police arrest one accused, classmates demand swift justice

Kolkata: Junior doctors have given a 48-hour ultimatum to identify those responsible for the mysterious death of a woman doctor in the seminar room of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Kolkata Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) overnight to investigate the incident, which is headed by Acting Joint CP Crime Muralidhar Sharma. Police have registered a murder case.

They are trying to determine who was in the room at the time of the incident and are interrogating everyone who was on night duty with the doctor that day, as well as those present in or around the building that night.

The initial post-mortem report indicates murder, with the possibility of rape also mentioned. Classmates and colleagues of the Moumita Mondal, the deceased,  have appealed for swift punishment of those involved. The police are actively investigating the situation, having arrested a person in the middle of the night and taken them to Lalbazar.

Attendant arrested

The police sources said the arrested person has been identified as Sanjoy Roy, an attendant of a private company. He is believed to the main culprit behind the brutal assault. A security personnel is also believed to aid him to commit the crime. His duty was on Thursday night, and upon questioning, the police found several inconsistencies in his answers, due to which he was detained.  Meanwhile, the deceased’s colleagues have raised questions about the investigation committee, claiming that the principal has been absent since morning. They are doubting the role of hospital authorities in the investigation.

Family demands answers

The mother of the victim said, “They have murdered my daughter. She was my only child, and I  made her a doctor with great difficulty.  The victim’s father said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has personally called them to offer condolences.  The family has also complained that they were not allowed to see the body after arriving at the hospital, and have filed a complaint against the hospital authorities.
