Kolkata: The alleged sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal’s Kolkata has sparked massive outrage with junior doctors at various hospitals holding protests.

The woman doctor was found dead inside the seminar hall of the hospital in north Kolkata on Friday. The were injury marks on 31-year-old woman’s private parts, stomach, neck, face and lips. The deceased, a second-year student of the chest medicine department, was on duty on Thursday night. The woman was sexually abused before she was killed, police said, citing preliminary autopsy report. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.

“The post-mortem examination was done and for the procedure, a board was formed with three doctors. The whole procedure was documented through videography. Students and family members were present as witnesses during the post-mortem proceedings,” Vineet Kumar Goyal, Kolkata Police Commissioner, said.

  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the murder of the doctor and said that the accused will be hanged, if needed. Calling the incident unfortunate, Banerjee said that she spoke to the family of the victim and assured them of proper action in the case. “I spoke to the victim’s family and assured them of proper action. I have directed for the case to be taken to a fast-track court. If needed, the accused will be hanged, even though I am not pro-capital punishment. They should be given the strictest punishment,” she told a local TV channel.
  • Junior doctors at various hospitals in West Bengal staged protest sit-ins and took out processions on Saturday demanding exemplary punishment to those involved in the alleged sexual assault and murder of the trainee doctor. The protests were held at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, National Medical College and Hospital and Medical College, Kolkata, Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital and Bankura Sammilani Medical College.
  • The SFI and DYFI, which are CPI(M)’s students’ and youth wings respectively, have decided to hold road blockades across West Bengal today and tomorrow to protest the murder of the woman postgraduate trainee doctor.

Accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government of trying to cover up its negligence, Adhikari said that the ruling TMC government has formed an 11-member inquiry committee that “bizarrely includes some interns”.
