The year was 1992 and the date was 6 December. Some karsevaks climbed the dome of the disputed structure in Ayodhya and razed it to the ground in no time. At that time, the government in Uttar Pradesh was of Kalyan Singh. It is said that when all this was happening in Ayodhya, the Chief Minister was sitting in his official residence in Lucknow and basking in the sun. However, the then Chief Minister Kalyan Singh took responsibility for this incident and resigned from his post on the same day. The entire country was shaken by the incident in Ayodhya. Phones started ringing from Lucknow to Delhi. Everyone wanted to know how all this happened suddenly in Ayodhya.

Ayodhya incident:

Author Hemant Sharma describes the events of Ayodhya in detail in his book “Ayodhya Ke Chashmadid”. In his book, he quotes Kalyan Singh as saying that he had instructed the officers “at no cost, bullets should be fired on the karsevaks”. In “Ayodhya Ke Chashmadid” it is told that Kalyan Singh took responsibility for the incident that took place on 6 December 1992. Kalyan Singh says, “I take responsibility for this myself. If bullets were not fired on the karsevaks present on the disputed structure, then no officer is responsible for this. I had given a written order in this matter that bullets should not be fired on anyone.

According to author Hemant Sharma’s book ‘Yuddh Mein Ayodhya’, VHP and BJP leaders were giving speeches near the Kar Seva Sthal since morning on 6 December 1992. On the morning of 6 December 1992, UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh called the Faizabad Commissioner twice. He asked if everything was alright there? Is there any possibility of any kind of disturbance? When Kalyan Singh got the news of the demolition of the disputed structure, he called Vinay Katiyar’s house and talked to Advani and asked him to resign. But, Advani refused to let him resign.

Kalyan Singh’s government had brought the copying ordinance

After the Ayodhya incident, his image emerged as a Hindutva leader. Kalyan Singh is also remembered for his work in the field of education. Kalyan Singh’s government had brought the Cheating Ordinance. The purpose of this law was to stop the practice of mass cheating in the state’s school and university examinations. It was non-bailable and under this the police was also allowed to enter the examination premises for investigation. However, the Cheating Ordinance was repealed in 1993.

…when he left BJP and formed his own party

Kalyan Singh became the Chief Minister of UP again in 1997. But, he remained in this post for only two years. He was also the Governor of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. People fondly called Kalyan Singh ‘Babuji’.

Kalyan Singh was also disillusioned with the BJP. Due to mutual differences, he left the BJP and formed his own party. However, he returned to the BJP in January 2004. But, citing neglect and humiliation in the BJP, he resigned from the party membership in 2009.

Today is the death anniversary of Kalyan Singh

In September 2019, he was tried for criminal conspiracy to demolish the disputed structure. He was acquitted by a special Central Bureau of Investigation court in 2020. He died on 21 August 2021 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. A year later, in 2022, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest award.
