JAIPUR: Pope Francis has appointed Reverent Joseph Kallarackal as the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jaipur. Presently the parish priest of Cathedral Church, Ajmer, the new Bishop is expected to assume charge in the near future.
The outgoing Bishop of Jaipur, Bishop Oswald J. Lewis, informing about the papal announcement here this afternoon, welcomed the new Bishop.
He (Oswald Lewis), said he would continue as caretaker till the new incumbent takes charge. Simultaneously, with the announcement of the new Bishop the Vatican has accepted Bishop Oswald’s resignation, which had been pending since June 2019. Bishop Oswald henceforth would be known as Bishop Emeritus.
The Bishop designate, Joseph Kallarackal, 59, hails from Anavilasam village in Devikulam tehsil of Idukki district in Kerala. After his schooling in Kerala, Joseph Kallarackal joined St.Theresa’s Minor Seminary in Ajmer.
He studied Philosophy and Theology at St.Joseph ‘s Regional Seminary in Allahabad and was ordained as priest in January 1997. He has done MA,B.Ed and B.Th.(Bachelor of Theology). Joining the Ajmer Catholic Diocese after his ordination as priest, Joseph Kallarackal has held the post of the Rector of St.Theresa’s Seminary, principal of schools, member of the College of Consulters and Dean and Ecclesiastical Advisor, Nurses Guild.
