Jharkhand train derailment: 2 dead, 18 injured as Howrah-Mumbai mail derails
Two people died, and 18 others were injured after a Howrah-Mumbai passenger train derailed on Tuesday (July 30).
The massive derailment involving 18 coaches, including 16 passenger cars took place around 3:43 am near Jharkhand’s Charadharpur division, between Rajkharswan West Outer and Barabamboo.
Railway officials attribute the incident to a prior derailment of a goods train on the opposite track, which collided with the passing passenger train.
However, further investigation is underway.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren directed officials to speed up relief operations and help those who got injured in the accident.
“The injured passengers were provided medical aid in Barabamboo. They were taken to Chakradharpur for better treatment,” a senior SER official informed PTI.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee of the neighbouring state West Bengal expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased and also hit out at the Centre over the rail incident.
“Another disastrous rail accident! Howrah- Mumbai mail derails in Chakradharpur division in Jharkhand today early morning, multiple deaths and huge number of injuries are the tragic consequences. I seriously ask: is this governance? This series of nightmares almost every week, this unending procession of deaths and injuries on railway tracks: for how long shall we tolerate this? Will there be no end to the callousness of Government of India?!” she wrote on X.

Meanwhile, the railways has announced ex gratia to the kin of each of the deceased. Compensation has also been announced for the injured.
“The railways announced Rs 10 lakh ex gratia for kin of each deceased, Rs 5 lakh for those with major injuries, Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries,” said, Aditya Kumar Choudhary, Senior DCM, Chakradharpur.
It is worth mentioning here that, a spate of train accidents has plagued the country this month. Just days after the Dibrugarh Express derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda, claiming four lives and injuring over 20, another incident occurred when a goods train came off the tracks near Amroha, disrupting rail traffic between Delhi and Lucknow.
