Hyderabad: A gang from Bihar has been arrested by the Telangana Police for purchasing old mobile phones, which were intended to be used for cybercrimes.

During the operation, law enforcement officials seized approximately 4,000 mobile phones and three motorcycles.

Operation Details

The arrest followed credible information received by the Cyber Security Bureau personnel of Ramagundam CCPS, who noticed suspicious activity in the Power House Colony of Godavarikhani.

According to the police, three individuals from Bihar were observed moving suspiciously in the area, attempting to purchase old mobile phones from residents at low prices. The phones were acquired by offering either plastic items or cash in exchange.

Upon receiving the tip-off, the Station House Officer (SHO) of CCPS and his team promptly arrived at the location, apprehending the three suspects.

The arrested individuals were identified as Mohammad Shamim, Abdul Salam, and Mohammad Iftikhar, all residents of Hathiya Diyara in Bihar.

Suspects’ Modus Operandi

Upon interrogation, the suspects revealed that they had been purchasing old mobile phones from residents in Ramagundam and neighboring districts for the past month.

These phones were intended to be transported back to Bihar, where they would be handed over to an associate in their village.

The associate, in turn, would repair and modify these phones before distributing them to cybercriminals operating in Jamtara, Deoghar, and other regions of Jharkhand.

The suspects further explained that the repaired phones were used by cyber fraudsters to conduct scams. The proceeds from these scams were then shared among the cybercriminals, the associate in Bihar, and the individuals involved in the procurement of the phones.

Police Action and Public Advisory

Based on the confessions, a suo moto case has been registered under Cr.No.30/2024, citing violations of the ITA Act-2008, BNSS Act, and other relevant sections at the CCPS, Ramagundam TGCSB.

The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to identify and apprehend the other individuals involved in the operation.

In light of this incident, the Cyber Security Bureau has issued a public advisory urging residents not to sell or give their old mobile phones to unknown individuals.

The bureau warned that such phones could be used in cyber frauds, potentially implicating the original owners in criminal activities due to the device’s identity being linked to fraudulent operations.
