Former India T20I and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma could be one of the prized catches if he decides to part ways with the Mukesh Ambani-owned Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. There is speculation that Rohit has communicated to MI that he doesn’t want to be retained by the five-time champions ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
One of the viral rumours ahead of the mega auction is that IPL’s most expensive franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) could bid as high as Rs 50 Crore for India’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper. LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka clarified the truth behind these viral rumours during the unveiling of former India pacer Zaheer Khan as the mentor of the LSG team for the IPL 2025 season in Kolkata on Wednesday (August 29).
“There is a rumour going on that LSG have kept Rs 50 crore separately for Rohit Sharma. Is this true?” an anchor asked on Sports Tak news channel.
“You tell me one thing, do you, or anybody know, whether Rohit Sharma is coming to the auctions or not? All these speculations are without any reason. Whether Mumbai Indians will release Rohit Sharma or not, whether he is coming to the auction or not, even if he comes if you are going to use 50 per cent of your salary cap on one player, how will you manage the other 22 players?” Sanjiv Goenka questioned.
“So is he in your wishlist?” the anchor asked again.

RPSG Group owner Goenka did not gave a straight answer. “Everybody has got a wishlist. You want best player, best captain to be in your team. It is not about wanting. What you have got and what is available. What can you do with that. This is that thing. I can want anyone but the same goes for all the franchises. You will not get everyone,” he added.
Overall, Rohit Sharma has turned out in 257 IPL matches so far in his career and scored 6,628 runs at an average of 29.72 with 2 hundreds and 43 fifties and a strike-rate of 131.14. He was replaced as MI skipper by all-rounder Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2024 season. Last year, Rohit scored 417 runs with 1 hundred and 1 fifty at a strike-rate of 150.
