Kolkata Knight Riders conjured up spin magic after Jason Roy’s sterling fifty and snapped their four-match losing streak with a 21-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday night.

Riding on Varun Chakravarthy’s three-wicket haul, where he went on to pick the big wicket of Glenn Maxwell, as well as well set Mahipal Lomror (34 off 18) and Dinesh Karthik (22 off 18), KKR derailed RCB’s chase and raced to their third win of the tournament.

With the win KKR made a step forward to climb from the 8th to the 7th position in the points table. The Nitish Rana and Co now have six points from eight games and a net run rate of -0.02. Mumbai Indians slided to the eighth, also with six points. from seven games. MI, however, have a lower NRR of -0.62. Chennai Super Kings hold the top spot on the points table with 10 points from seven games and an NRR of 0.66, followed by defending champions Gujarat Titans.

 

Points Table

KKR posted a massive 200 for 5 batting first. Jason Roy scored 56 off 29, striking at 193.1. Skipper Nitish Rana added 48 off 21 balls at a brilliant strike rate of 228.57.

For RCB, stand-in captain Virat Kohli (54 off 37) and Faf du Plessis (17 off 7) made a steady start. In-form du Plessis, the top aggregator of IPL 2023, departed in just the third over. The next two batters in – Shahbaz Ahmed (2, 5 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (5, 4 balls) – too failed to deliver and the Royals’ chase ran into an early trouble.

Lormor (34, 18 ball) and Kohli shared a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket in five overs and three balls. After the former departed, there were no more partnerships as RCB managed just 179 in their 20 overs.
