India’s ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision, Vietnam’s 2045 vision has spurred growth in both countries, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that he and his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh extensively discussed all areas of mutual cooperation and took several steps to prepare a roadmap for the future.

He said that both the countries believe that due to India’s ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision and Vietnam’s 2045 vision, development has gained momentum in both countries.

“…This is opening up many new areas of mutual cooperation and therefore, today we have made a new Plan of Action to further strengthen our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. New steps have been taken for cooperation in the field of defence and security… The agreement reached on a credit line of 300 million dollars will strengthen Vietnam’s maritime security. We have also decided that cooperation will be emphasised on the subject of terrorism and cyber security. We agreed that the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement should be reviewed and concluded at an early date to realise the mutual trade potential,” said PM Modi.

Welcoming Vietnam PM and his delegation to India, PM Modi said in the last decade, India’s relationship with Vietnam has grown manifold.

“Our bilateral trade has increased by 85%. In the last decade, our connectivity has increased and now we have over 50 direct flights,” he said.

He also expressed his deepest condolences on the demise of Vietnam’s General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

“He was India’s good friend,” said PM Modi.

Talking about Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision, PM Modi said that India sees Vietnam as an important partner when it comes to Modi government’s these two policies.

“In our Act East Policy and our Indo-Pacific vision, Vietnam is our important partner. There is a good agreement between our views regarding Indo-Pacific. We support ‘Vikaswaad’, not ‘Vistarwaad’. We will continue our cooperation for a free, open, rules-based and prosperous Indo-Pacific…,” said the PM.

He said at spiritual level, people of both the countries are connected by Buddhism, which is a shared heritage.

“We invite people from Vietnam to the Buddhist circuit in India. We want that the youth of Vietnam should also take advantage of Nalanda University,” PM Modi said.

On his part, Chinh said that he and PM Modi were pleased to witness the immense gains in bilateral relations, especially since the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“During his (PM Modi’s) visit 8 years ago, we reiterated the priority and the importance that our two countries give to each other in our respective foreign policies. We agree to continue to preserve and cherish the traditional ties between Vietnam and India as close, trusted and faithful friends…,” said Chinh.

He thanked India for rolling out four types of vaccines during COVID-19 which also benefited Vietnam.

“India also played an important role in the fight against COVID-19 with four types of vaccines from which we also benefited. Even in the production of COVID-19 treatment medicines, we also imported quite a quantity from India…,” said the Vietnamese PM.

He said Indo-Pacific is a locomotive for growth in the world and this is the time when there are intertwining opportunities and challenges.

“…The Indo-Pacific is a locomotive for growth in the world…We are at a time when there are intertwining opportunities and challenges. There are opportunities intertwined with challenges, but there are more challenges than opportunities…,” he added.

Chinh also expressed gratitude to PM Modi, other Indian leaders and the people of India for extending condolences and sending National Security Advisor to the funeral of Comrade General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Earlier in the day, several MoUs were signed between the two countries in the presence of PM Modi and the Vietnam PM at Hyderabad House.
