Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday (August 17) informed that the Sabarmati Express, traveling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad, derailed near Kanpur at 2:35 am today after its engine struck an “object placed on the track.” The incident occurred near Govindpuri station, causing 20 coaches to derail. There were no reports of injuries or fatalities.

Vaishnaw announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that evidence from the scene has been preserved, and investigations are underway by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Uttar Pradesh Police. Early indications suggest that the derailment might be linked to a deliberate act, as a foreign object was found near the 16th coach, and damage to the engine’s cattle guard supports this theory.

The derailment disrupted rail services, leading to the cancellation of several trains and the many others were diverted.
