Mumbai: The Indian Navy successfully executed a medical evacuation of a Chinese sailor from a bulk carrier off the coast of Mumbai, in response to an emergency call received on Tuesday.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai was alerted on July 23 about a severe medical situation aboard the bulk carrier ZHONG SHAN MEN, located 200 Nautical Miles (approximately 370 km) from Mumbai. The distress signal reported that a 51-year-old Chinese sailor was critically injured, suffering from heavy blood loss, and required immediate evacuation.
In response, a Seaking helicopter took off from the Indian Naval Air Station INS Shikra at 6 in the morning. Despite challenging weather conditions, with winds exceeding 45 knots and the ship experiencing significant rolling, the team managed to airlift the patient from the bridge wing of the vessel without a clear area on the continuous deck.
The individual was flown back to the air station by the Indian Navy helicopter and then transferred to a hospital for further medical treatment.
Additionally, ICGS Samrat was redirected to provide support. This collaborative effort, orchestrated by the MRCC (MBI) and the Indian Navy, ensured the patient’s safe and prompt evacuation.
