In a fresh incident three persons died in a clash between two armed groups in Manipur on Friday.
The incident happened at Molnoi in Tengoupal district of Manipur. A senior police official who does not want to be named confirmed that at least three people have died so far in a clash between a tribal militant group and tribal village volunteers, both the groups are from the same community. The situation remained tense in the area.
On Thursday militants exchanged gunfire in the Kangvai area of Churachandpur district.The gun battle lasted for about 30 minutes.
A team of Bishnupur Police Station led by DSP P Sanjoy arrived at the scene. Meitei villagers of Torbung had only recently resettled after they were internally displaced due to the ongoing conflict that began on May 3, 2023.
Assembly Congress
During the ongoing budget session of the Manipur legislative assembly five opposition MLAs staged a walkout on Friday and decided to boycott the remaining sittings after their appeal to seek an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was rejected.
Opposition MLAs from the Congress appealed to the speaker and the treasury bench to take a unanimous decision in the House to seek an appointment with the PM to resolve the crisis in Manipur, they have proposed that all Manipur MLAs should together meet PM Modi.
Five opposition MLAs, including former chief minister Okram Ibobi, former speaker Th Lokeshwar, and Manipur PCC president K Meghachandra, submitted notices for private members’ resolutions to the Speaker on August 2, who rejected it, as a mark of protests the opposition Congress MLAs staged a walkout and have decided to boycott the rest of the session.
At least 226 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.
The riots began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
