Bihar Rains: Extremely heavy rainfall has been forecasted in parts of Bihar with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Friday issuing a ‘red’ alert for as many nine districts of the state for the next 36 hours.

As per the latest IMD bulletin, extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely to lash various places across nine districts in Bihar over the next 36 hours .

“Extremely heavy rainfall to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning is likely to occur at isolated places in Aurangabad, Banka, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Jamui, Katihar, Munger, Nawada and Rohtas districts in the next two-three days,” the IMD bulletin said.

The weather agency has also issued an ‘orange alert’ for Arwal, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Jamui, Jehanabad, Kaimur, Katihar, Khagaria, Lakhisarai, Munger, Nalanda, Nawada, Rohtas and Sheikhpura districts for the same time period.

A ‘yellow alert’ has also been sounded for heavy rainfall over the next four-five days at a few places in Katihar, Rohtas, Aurangabad and Gaya districts, the IMD bulletin further said.

“Thunderstorm/lightning with gusting wind speed (30-40 kmph) is likely to occur at one or two places in most of the state in the next four-five days,” it said.

Red alert denotes ‘take action’, orange alert ‘be prepared’, yellow alert ‘watch and stay updated’ and green alert signifies ‘no action needed’.

The state government has asked people to stay abreast with weather-related updates.

8 killed in lightning strikes

Meanwhile, in related news, as many as eight people were killed due to lightning strikes in four districts of Bihar during the last 24 hours.

As per an official release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Friday, state capital Patna and Aurangabad reported three deaths each, followed by one each in Nawada and Saran.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed sorrow over the deaths and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, the release said, adding that Kumar has appealed to people to follow advisories issued by the Disaster Management Department.

On Thursday, 12 people were killed after being struck by lightning in four districts of the state.
