Bhubaneswar: A businessman travelling on a bus from Berhampur to Kolkata was robbed of 17 kg of silver and a substantial amount of Rs 5 lakh on Friday.

According to sources, the victim was identified as Mithun Mandal, a resident of Kolkata. He had come to Berhampur for some business-related work and was returning to Kolkata on a bus.  Mandal is reported to have kept his bag containing the valuables on his seat and stepped out for a brief moment to have tea. Upon his return, he was stunned to find his bag empty.

Meanwhile, the bus had stopped near Bhejiput outpost on National Highway 16, close to Khallikot police station, for refreshment of passengers.

The stolen items include 17 kg of fine silver and around Rs 5 lakh in cash. The businessman immediately filed a complaint with the outpost police in this regard.

The victim said, “As a frequent business traveller to Berhampur, I often took breaks at tea stalls. But on this trip, my brief absence led to a massive loss – my bags containing 17 kg of silver and Rs 5 lakh were stolen. I had stepped out of the bus for a quick refreshment, leaving my bags behind. But when I returned, they were gone. Some fellow passengers had seen two men taking my bags.”
