New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has ordered yoga guru Ramdev to take down specific “offending” social media posts related to the use of “Coronil” for COVID-19. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani stated he was “allowing” a plea submitted by several doctors’ associations against Ramdev.

“There are directions for taking down some of the offending posts and content. There are directions to the defendant to take down those set of tweets in three days,” said the judge. If Ramdev does not comply, the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) will remove the content, the court added.

A copy of the order is awaited. The plea is part of a 2021 lawsuit filed by doctors’ associations against Ramdev, his associate Acharya Balkrishna, and Patanjali Ayurveda. Justice Bhambhani had reserved the order on May 21 after hearing arguments from the parties.

The lawsuit claims Ramdev made “unsubstantiated claims” that “Coronil” was a cure for COVID-19, contrary to the drug’s license, which states it is merely an “immuno-booster.”

The plea was brought to the high court in 2021 by three resident doctors’ associations from the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences at Rishikesh, Patna, and Bhubaneswar, along with the Association of Resident Doctors, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, Union of Resident Doctors of Punjab (URDP), Resident Doctors’ Association, Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College, Meerut, and Telangana Junior Doctors’ Association, Hyderabad.

They alleged a misinformation campaign and marketing strategy to boost the sales of Ramdev’s products, including “Coronil,” which claimed to be an alternative treatment for COVID-19. On October 27, 2021, the high court issued a summons to Ramdev and others, stating the lawsuit was not frivolous and a case for its institution was “definitely” made out. PTI
