‘Hamko arrest kar ke dikhaao’, cybercriminals threaten Ahmedabad resident; scam her of Rs 14,000
For over two weeks, Lavanya Banerjee, a startup co-founder from Ahmedabad, has been receiving relentless phone calls from a group of cybercriminals who previously scammed her mother out of Rs 14,000. Instead of disappearing after their crime, the scammers have taken to taunting Banerjee, challenging her to have them arrested.
“I never imagined I’d be in this situation,” Banerjee said. “The fraudsters seem to take pleasure in harassing me. They call me at least a dozen times a day, mockingly telling me that the authorities haven’t caught up with them.”
The harassment began after Banerjee threatened to report them to the police. “A day after scamming my mother in late July, they called again, trying to extort more money. When I answered, I demanded they return the money and warned them I’d file a police complaint,” she explained. Banerjee promptly reported the incident at the Shahibaug police station.
Despite blocking their numbers, the scammers continued to call from different lines. “I was astonished by their audacity. They would say things like, ‘Hamko arrest kar ke dikhaao. Ab tak koi nahi aaya hamey pakadne’ (Show us if you can get us arrested. No one has come to catch us yet),” Banerjee recounted.
Her mother, Soumi, was duped while shopping for clothes online. After making an initial payment, she received a call claiming the payment had not gone through and was asked to pay again. Believing she would be refunded the first payment, Soumi ended up paying several hundred rupees more, resulting in a total loss of nearly Rs 14,000.
