Guwahati schools closed: Heavy rain causes flooding, disrupts daily life – India News

Guwahati Weather Report: In response to severe weather conditions, all educational institutions in Guwahati, including government and private colleges, as well as coaching centers, have been closed today. This decision was announced by Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan following flash floods caused by heavy rains on August 5.

Official Closure Order

The Deputy Commissioner issued an official order stating: “In view of the situation arising out of the flash floods caused by heavy rains in Guwahati city that occurred on August 5, all educational institutions (both government and private) are hereby declared closed on August 6 within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area.”

Normal Life Disrupted

The heavy downpour on August 5, lasting for two hours, led to significant flooding in various parts of Guwahati, particularly under flyovers. The city experienced severe waterlogging, which resulted in extensive traffic congestion and significant disruptions. Nearly all peripheral roads were affected, with commuters, school students, and office workers stranded for hours. Areas such as Zoo Road, RG Baruah Road, GS Road, Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar, Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Hedayetpur, MLA quarters in Dispur, Lachit Nagar, Tarun Nagar, Jyotikuchi, Ghoramara, VIP Road, Rajgarh Road, Jorabat, and Chatribari saw extensive water accumulation.

Heavy Rainfall Alert

Although conditions improved in some areas after midnight, many parts of Guwahati remained inundated on the morning of August 6. The road leading to Shillong continued to be affected, with vehicles stranded. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.

The closure of educational institutions reflects the seriousness of the situation and the need to ensure the safety of students and staff amid ongoing adverse weather conditions.
