Good Samaritan Women Society (GSWS) Chairperson Neithonuo Liegise today made a fervent plea to the State Government to consider for creation of a day care centre/ recreation centre in Old Age Home for senior citizens in Nagaland.

Liegise said that she had already submitted the proposal to the State Government but the same is yet to be materialised.

“We need to come up with a bigger vision and policy which is constructive, useful, productive and meaningful for our senior citizens,” she added,  during the celebration of 19th Foundation Day of Good Samaritan Senior Citizen’s Home (GSSCH), Meriema near Kohima on August 1.

We need some creative programmes for senior citizens to come out and spend their time, the Chairperson further highlighted,  adding that physiotherapy facility, day care centre, conference hall for fellowship of senior citizens are needed. She said that GSSCH has not received any grant- in- aid for the last 11 years.

In 2015, it had received grant- in- aid from the government for three years but it was stopped thereafter. “The State Government should come forward and support us with some funds for effective function of Old Age Home,” she said.

She also sought the intervention of the State Government to earmark central fund provision to support senior citizens home in the state.

Further, Liegise urged the government, individual and public to come together and create a condusive environment for senior citizens and enable them to “live meaningfully, actively, productively and peacefully.”

Currently, the GSSCH accommodates 23 senior citizens out of a total capacity of 25 beds.
