In a significant development, the Government of Mizoram has allocated the 2400 MW Darzo Lui Pumped Storage Project (PSP) to SJVN Limited. SJVN Limited, a joint venture of the Government of India (GOI) and the Government of Himachal Pradesh (GOHP), is a Mini Ratna and Schedule ‘A’ Company. The company has received a Letter of Intent for the allotment of this ambitious project.

The Darzo Lui PSP, with an installed capacity of 2,400 MW, is proposed across Darzo Nallah, a tributary of the Tuipui River. The estimated cost of the project, upon completion, stands at INR 13,947 crores, including IDC and financing costs at the April 2023 price level. This project marks SJVN Limited’s first venture in the state of Mizoram.

The Darzo Lui PSP is an on-stream closed-loop type pumped storage project, featuring eight units of 300 MW each. The project is designed to generate an annual energy output of 4,993.20 million units (MU) with 95 percent plant availability. Additionally, the annual input energy required for pumping water to the upper reservoir is estimated to be about 6,331 MU, also at 95 percent plant availability. The project is expected to be completed within 72 months.

The agreement is set to be signed within three months between SJVN Limited and the Government of Mizoram.

The North-eastern state of Mizoram receives an average solar insolation of about 4.5 kWh/m2/day and has approximately 300 sunshine days. The estimated solar potential of Mizoram, as calculated by National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), is approximately 9.09 GWp. Another notable project in the state is BVG Mizoram Solar PV Park 1, a 25 MW solar PV power project that’s expected to begin construction in 2024 and be operational in 2025.
