Goa police department has suspended a duty master attached to the Anjuna police station following allegations that he was supporting the clubs which played music beyond permissible limit and beyond the specified time.

Sources said the police department has suspended Rama Parab and orders have been issued to conduct disciplinary inquiry against him.

A senior police officer said the complaints relate to a pattern of misconduct by colluding with pubs and restaurants to allow music beyond permissible limit and time, operating beyond designated hours, and deploying police constables on duty who allegedly support clubs flouting the rules.

However, sources in the police department have questioned whether a duty master, who is not a police officer, can really help the clubs flout the rules.

There are senior police officers such as the police station in-charge who is a police inspector, there is a sub-divisional police officer etc who should be actually made accountable rather than subordinate police personnel, sources in the police department said adding, “Or there could be some different reason for which Parab has been suspended.”

Sources said there are allegations that Parab was unable to provide a police escort to a senior government official owing to a staff shortage at that particular time. The claim was however denied by a senior police officer. Incidentally in January 2017, the Goa police department had suspended police inspector Krishna Sinari who was attached to the Anjuna police station for alleged dereliction of duty. Sinari had reportedly failed to take action against a complaint of alleged loud music at a beach shack in Anjuna and that the activities at the location were said to be going on beyond permissible time in violation of the code of conduct.

Since the last couple of days, the residents of Anjuna, Vagator, and surrounding areas have been protesting against loud music.

On Friday, the residents held a candlelight protest, accusing the Anjuna police and the GSPCB of failing to honour their assurance to crack down on loud music at night.

Sources said that the policeman has been suspended to pacify the agitating residents, however the locals cannot be fooled as they know well what powers a duty master has.
