Move part of NEP implementation

Panaji : With the implementation of the national education policy (NEP) 2020 beginning from Class IX onwards, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) will conduct the examination for the particular standard in two semesters covering 10 subjects.

For core subjects, the board will set question papers for schools; the question paper would comprise 50% multiple choice questions and 50% subjective questions.

The core subjects include the three languages, mathematics, science and social science. Except for science, all subjects will have question paper of 80 marks each (external component by the board) and 20 marks for internal assessment.

For science, the question paper would be of 70 marks (external component by the board) and 30 marks would be for internal assessment.

For passing, a minimum of 33% overall is required with no separate passing in external component set by the board.

“To qualify for the benefit of sports merit marks (SMM), sports candidates must secure at least 10% marks (8/80 or 7/70 marks) in external component of the board. After adding SMM, the total score must be at least 33% in the subject or subjects including internal assessment,” the GBSHSE explained.

It added that sports merit marks will be applied if the candidate passes in each of the subjects.

It has however clarified that SMM cannot be used to pass a subject or subjects where the candidate has failed to meet the minimum requirements, or else sports merit marks will be carried forward.

Students failing in one or two core subjects will be declared pass if they score 80% marks in one or two elective subjects and minimum 50% marks in remaining one or two elective subjects.

“The board has issued guidelines to schools for setting question papers for elective subjects,” an official said.

The assessment will be done by the respective schools and marks will be uploaded on web portal developed by the board.
