After nearly a decade-long closure, Ghantewala in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, reopens in an all new avatar. The centuries-old sweet shop, known for its delicacies such as sohan halwa, Karachi halwa, aloo laccha, dalmoth and pista lauj, now has a versatile menu on offer. Chhola-bhature, dilli ki chaat besides sweets prepared in desi ghee, the outlet has introduced gluten-free delicacies like ragi (finger millet) laddu, sweetmeats made of dry fruits, which contain less sugar, as well as bakery products.
Sushant Jain, Director of Ghantewala, had shut shop in 2015 after it had become difficult to run the workshop due to stringent licensing norms. However, he started an online store during the pandemic and is now determined to honour the rich history while infusing it with new energy.
“We want to modernise the techniques of creating and operating sweets while keeping in touch with the roots of the business. Now the family business is returning in a new avatar, with my son Aryan Jain, the 8th-generation custodian, leading the way by revamping the brand into a modern QSR. This revival is not just a testament to a continued legacy but also a promise to serve patrons with the best quality and experience,” said Jain.

Established in 1790 by Lala Sukh Ram, Ghantewala was one of the oldest halwais to cater to the Mughal emperors, presidents and prime ministers of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Morarji Desai, Mohammad Rafi, Rajiv Gandhi and several others.
