KKR and SRH were the two IPL franchises who were against the mega auctions that happen every four to five years. They expressed their concern in the meeting between the BCCI and the IPL franchises on July 31.

Both franchises were not keen on letting go of their matchwinners who performed exceedingly well for them in IPL 2024.  They, however, favored the mini-auctions that take place before every IPL season which helps franchises fill the gaps and complete their squads.

SRH owner Kavya Maran in the meeting said that the franchises take years to invest in the players that they buy and the mega auctions then force franchises to break the core of the side and rebuild the side from, scratch which is a tough process.

Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shahrukh Khan also found support in Kavya. KKR have over the years invested heavily in the likes of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. They have safeguarded before every IPL mega auction but this time around they might have to release one of them eventually.

This leaves them fighting for the two legendary West Indies T20I players with the rest of the nine franchises. In this article, we take a look at three overseas players Kolkata Knight Riders might release ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Reports say that franchises will get a minimum of 100 crores each for the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Overseas Players Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Will Release Ahead Of IPL 2025 Mega Auction

Mitchell Starc

Kolkata Knight Riders invested 24.75 crores on the Aussies pacer to get his services for IOPL 2024. It yielded results as he ended the season with 17 wickets and played his part in helping the team win their third IPL title.

However, the Knight Riders will have to release him ahead of the mega auction to retain the funds needed to build the side from scratch. They will aim to buy him back at a cheaper price if possible. KKR releasing him might be a forceful move.

Dushmantha Chameera

Lankan pacer Dusmantha Chameera was one of the overseas pacers bought by KKR in the last auction. He played just one match which was eventually the match against Punjab Kings where the Kings won 262 chasing.

That was the only match the Lankan pacer played with KKR resting Mitchell Starc. Chameera also recently missed out on the recent T20I series against India and the Knight Riders management might release him given his fitness concerns.

Jason Roy

With KKR having Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Phil Salt as wicketkeeper-batter options who also open the batting, Knight Riders might release Jason Roy ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Roy pulled out of IPL 2024 citing personal reasons.

That turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Knight Riders as they named Phil Salt as his replacement and it turned out to be a masterstroke. He formed a terrific partnership with Sunil Narine and scored over 400 runs in the season.

Meanwhile, IPL franchises have reportedly asked the BCCI to impose a two-year ban on players who withdraw from a season without legitimate cause after being bought at the auction. The likes of Jason Roy, and Wanindu Hasaranga amongst others pulled out of the IPL 2024 citing personal reasons.
