The Kolkata police on Monday (August 12) informed that Civic Volunteer Sanjoy Roy, arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, was reportedly addicted to pornography, with disturbing and violent content found on his mobile phone. Roy, 33, had been a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police since 2019 and was known for his multiple marriages and reputation as a “womaniser.”

“The pornography content in his mobile phone was quite disturbing and violent. We wonder about the state of his mind as watching such things is quite unnatural,” a police officer said. 

History of physically abusing women

Investigation revealed Roy had a history of physically abusing his wives. Roy’s neighbors reported that his marriages were troubled. His first wife was from Behala, his second from Park Circus, his third from Barrackpore, and his fourth from Alipore. Regular disturbances and fights were noted by those living nearby.

“His fourth wife, who was working at a petrol pump in Alipore, had also lodged a complaint of domestic violence, which went on till legal separation was granted,” the police officer added.

Accused’s hospital access unchecked due to police ties

As a trained boxer, Roy established connections with senior police officers, leading to his transfer to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and a post at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the incident occurred. 

“He had access to all departments owing to his proximity with some senior police officers and the hospital authorities. Nobody had the guts to stop his unhindered movements in and around the hospital,” the officer said.

Accused mother cries innocence 

Despite the allegations, Roy’s mother, Malati Roy, has denied the charges, claiming her son is innocent and suggesting he has been framed. “I do not know anything, but my son is innocent. I think he has been framed,” she told PTI. She mentioned that Roy attended school in Bhabanipur and was involved in the NCC.

Roy has been charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS. “There is ample evidence that the accused was throwing his weight around because of his proximity with senior police officers. This aspect is also under investigation,” the officer said.

Roy’s access to police barracks, where he reportedly returned after the crime, is also under scrutiny. “In fact, he had gone back to the barrack after committing the crime and slept there,” the officer said.

The body of the female doctor was discovered at the hospital on Friday, leading to Roy’s arrest the following day after a Bluetooth headphone was found at the crime scene.
