While Delhi NCR witnessed incidents of drowning, building collapses and electrocutions, Himachal Pradesh saw devastation due to cloudbursts and flash floods swept away highways in Uttarakhand.
Torrential rains on Wednesday wreaked havoc in several parts of North India leaving more than 15 people dead and several missing. While Delhi NCR witnessed incidents of drowning due to massive waterlogging, building collapses and electrocutions, Himachal Pradesh saw devastation due to cloudbursts and flash floods swept away highways in Uttarakhand. Waterlogging was also reported from some parts of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its forecast said more rains were predicted in the northern parts of the country. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rains in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh on August 1.
7 Dead in Delhi NCR
At least seven people were killed in Delhi while three people suffered injuries in separate incidents as the national capital witnessed heavy rains on Wednesday.
A woman along with her son drowned in a waterlogged drain near Khoda Colony in Delhi’s Ghazipur area, while, a 12-year-old boy died due to electrocution at Bindapur area of Dwarka district. One person was killed in the Subzi Mandi area and three more were injured — two in Shastri Park and one in Defence Colony – due to building collapse incidents following the torrential rain.
In Gurugram, three people died due to electrocution near IFFCO Chowk metro station around 10 pm on Wednesday after a high-tension wire broke and fell on them due to heavy rains.
The Delhi Police received 2,945 calls in the last 24 hours regarding traffic jams, 127 calls for water logging and 27 complaints regarding building collapse and 50 of tree uprooting.
Cloudbursts Devastate Himachal Pradesh, 2 Dead
The rain fury lead to devastation in Shimla and Mandi districts of Himachal Pradesh as cloudbursts hit the region on Wednesday. While two people died, over 50 were missing after the two separate cloudburst incidents in Himachal Pradesh. The cloudburst incidents were reported in Rampur tehsil of Shimla, Padhar tehsil of Mandi district, and the villages of Jaon and Nirmand in Kullu.
Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said teams of NDRF, SDRF, Police, Home Guard and Fire Services were engaged in relief, search and rescue operations.
Himachal Pradesh Minister Jagat Singh Negi said that the barrage of the Malana power project in Kullu had collapsed, leaving people stranded and road connectivity currently cut off.
The minister said that several bridges were damaged following the incessant rainfall in the state and CM Sukhu had called an emergency meeting.
A video went viral on social media showing a multistorey building in Himachal Pradesh collapsing and getting swept away by the swollen currents of the Parvati River. The Beas River was also flowing above the danger mark.
10 Killed in Uttarakhand
Heavy rains and flash floods threw life out of gear in parts of Uttarakhand, with Tehri and Rudraprayag districts being the worst-affected. At least 10 people have been killed due to landslides and rain-related accidents since Wednesday evening.
The SDRF has evacuated nearly 1,000 pilgrims who were stranded in different parts of the Kedarnath trek owing to rains and landslides. Authorities said the foot road to Kedarnath shrine in Rudraprayag district that starts from Gaurikund had been severely damaged in at least nine places.
Around 20-25 metres of the national highway connecting Rudraprayag and Rishikesh had been washed away, making vehicular movement difficult. About 30 metres of the highway between Sonprayag and Gaurikund had been either washed away or affected due to debris that came with the landslide.
Waterlogging In Parts of UP and Punjab, 3 Dead in Jaipur
In Jaipur, three people lost their lives after they were trapped in a flooded basement amid heavy rains.
Heavy rains also disrupted life in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab on Wednesday.
In Lucknow, intense rainfall led to extensive waterlogging around the UP Vidhan Sabha and affected several areas of the state capital. In Varanasi, water entered parts of the cremation site of Manikarnika Ghat, with people having to wait for carrying out cremations.
In Bhatinda, rains lead to waterlogging in several parts.
