The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) Nagaland branch today celebrated its 75th anniversary at Muskan Youth Centre, Kohima.

Dr Leamnyei Konyak, Chief Medical Officer Kohima appreciated FPAI for their contribution towards the people in various ways. He also saluted the pioneers of this Association both national and state branch for their commendable achievements since its inception.

FPAI was formed by recognizing that, having too many children and repeated pregnancies becoming detrimental to women’s health. Therefore, a group of concerned intellectual women decided to address the issues, which was resulted in the establishment of the Family Planning Association of India in 1949 and affiliated to the International Planned Parenthood Federation, he said.

FPAI is a voluntary, non-Governmental organization which was established and pioneered the Family planning movement in India. The Association works on a wide range of Sexual and reproductive Health and rights issues, encompassing family planning, maternal Health, child survival, HIV & AIDS, Safe abortion, reproductive tract cancer screening and prevention. Gender empowerment and young people and mitigation of Gender based Violence, he stated.

Key strategies of FPAI includes ensuring access to high quality sexual reproductive health services, and strengthening access to information and service to young people, comprehensive sexuality education and capacity building of health, he said. 

Health issues engaging with communities and individual to change Gender disparity and promote sexual and reproductive Health and rights. Providing livelihood opportunities for economic empowerment of the poor and vulnerable and advocacy for policy change at the national and state level.

Some of the most important benefits of Family planning service are visible in; preventing pregnancy related health risk in women; Reducing infant Mortality; Reducing maternal mortality; Helping to prevent HIV & AIDS; Empowering people and enhancing education; Reducing Adolescent pregnancies; improve quality life and Slowing population growth, he stated.

He said also congratulates and thanked the FPAI for empowering people for transforming Gender norms and power dynamics to promote Gender equality, reduce gender based violence and improve the economic status of women and other vulnerable groups through their tireless effort and valuable family planning services rendered to the people of Nagaland.

Vincent Belho, General Manager of FPAI Nagaland Branch presented a brief report and also acknowledged the journey of FPAI 75 years of service. ASRHiE in the Humanitarian setting was delivered by Vingosanuo Khatso, Program Officer.

The programme was compere by Alenuo Kelio, Youth Volunteer, BSC. while the welcome address was delivered by Atsibu Usou, Youth Volunteer, BSC. The programme was led by Thejavizo Kire, Chairperson, BSC while vote of thanks was proposed by Punasongla Jamir, Counselor followed by a TopActs Presentation.
