Former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu leaves J&K Apni Party over ideological differences
Junaid Azim Mattu, former Mayor of Srinagar and a prominent member of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, has announced his exit from the party in a heartfelt statement shared on social media. The decision comes just weeks ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
In his announcement posted on X, Mattu expressed his decision to leave the J&K Apni Party with “a heavy heart” and profound humility. He extended his gratitude to the party’s President, Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari, and his colleagues, wishing them well in their future endeavors.

Mattu cited a pledge he took during his Hajj pilgrimage earlier this year as a influencial factor in his decision. He explained that his pledge was to adhere to his personal convictions and engage in politics guided by his own principles. This commitment, coupled with extensive consultations with his supporters over the past week, led him to conclude that his values were no longer aligned with the party’s ideology.
“During my Hajj pilgrimage earlier this year, I had taken a solemn pledge to uphold my conviction and do a politics guided by my own principles and a sense of discerning the right from the wrong.
“Primarily underscored by this solemn pledge and based also on extensive consultations with my workers and supporters over the last five days, I have reached this decision.
“One cannot and should not criticize what one has been a part of — for good or for bad. My best wishes are with Altaf Sahab, an elder brother who has been nothing but kind, protective and large-hearted. However, my own convictions are no longer congruent or symmetrical with the ideology of the party and in this situation.”
In his statement, Mattu added that remaining with the party or contesting the elections under its banner would be disingenuous given the ideological divergence. He noted that the party is now free to nominate another candidate for the Zadibal constituency in his place.
“To still remain associated with the party or to contest elections as a party candidate would be outrightly disingenuous. My party is now at a complete liberty to field an appropriate candidate from Zadibal in my place.”
He concluded his statement with a prayer for guidance towards righteousness.
