Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee passes away

What’s the story

Former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, passed away at the age of 80.

His family confirmed that he died at his home in Ballygunge, Kolkata, at 8:20 am on Thursday.

He is survived by his wife Mira and daughter Suchetna.

Bhattacharjee had been admitted to a private hospital in Alipore on July 29, 2023, due to multiple health issues.

Dealing with COPD, age-related issues

Diagnosed with a lower respiratory tract infection and “Type 2” respiratory failure, he had been dealing with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other age-related issues.

His last public appearance was at the Left’s rally at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata before the 2019 general polls, using oxygen support.

Bhattacharjee final CM from CPM

During the 34-year reign of the Left Front in Bengal, Bhattacharjee was the second and final CM from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or (CPM), serving from 2000 to 2011 for 11 consecutive years.

Bhattacharjee stepped down from the CPM’s Politburo and Central Committee in 2015 and left the state secretariat in 2018.
