The beautiful waterfalls in the Sunshine State truly come into their own during the monsoon season

When it rains in Goa, the Sunshine State is transformed into an emerald green haven of tranquillity. The otherwise sun-drenched beaches lose their charm for a while, but the state’s magnificent waterfalls are stunning destinations in their own right. 

Here are five great waterfalls to seek out in the monsoon in Goa – but do be careful to ensure your own safety and that of others with you.

Netravali Waterfall (main image)

Located within the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary, this waterfall is about 50 kilometres from Margao in South Goa. You can drive to the nearest point and then trek for about 25 minutes through lush forest to get to this waterfall that forms a pool with a cascade like a curtain. It makes a wonderful spot for a picnic and immersion into nature, and is a photographer’s dream. The sanctuary is also known for its wildlife and bird-watching opportunities.

Kuskem Waterfall
Sited 20 kilometres from the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary off NH17, this waterfall is in the picturesque Kuskem village in Canacona Taluka, South Goa. Since it is about 12 kilometres from the sanctuary’s entry point, Hathipal, you can stay in the forest department’s eco cottages. A small hike is needed to get to Kuskem, but you will be rewarded with breathtaking forest views and clear waters in which you can take a dip. The Anvli Waterfall is situated nearby.

Kesarval Spring

Surrounded by betelnut palms and tropical woodland and sited near the Zuari River and the Verna Plateau in South Goa, Kesarval Springs is 22 kilometres from Panaji. The spring, accessible by a short trek,  is known for its medicinal properties; the mineral-infused waters are believed to heal skin and eye ailments.

Bamanbudo Waterfall 

Located near Ambe Ghat in Canacona, South Goa, this waterfall features high-force water sliding down the rocks, forming a stream at the bottom. Many say it resembles a waterslide! It is considered perfect for family picnics due to its easy accessibility.

Hivrem Waterfall

The only waterfall in North Goa in this list, the Hivrem Waterfall takes a 45-minute trek to get to. Surrounded as it is by heavy forest, this waterfall is made for adventure seekers and offers great views of the Sahyadris along the way.
