The Department of Food Safety initiated hygiene inspections at 753 locations across the state, including roadside food vendors, hotels, and restaurants. Within the BBMP jurisdiction, inspections were conducted at 19 locations in the east zone, eight in the south, 15 in the north, and 25 in the west. Officials reported that enforcement visits were carried out, and notices were issued, urging vendors to maintain proper hygiene and cleanliness. Statewide, a total of Rs 1,68,000 in fines was collected.
Earlier, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced that the Department of Food Safety will conduct a two-day campaign to raise awareness among the public about food safety and to curb unsafe food practices. He added that the public will soon be able to test the quality of the food they consume. To facilitate this, the government has decided to install 3,400 testing kits in hotels, restaurants, food parks, and other public places. The minister revealed that 1,000 kits have already arrived and will soon be available for public use.
Regarding food business licences, the state has set a target of 106,895, achieving 68% progress so far. The minister urged remaining food business operators to register and obtain licences, warning that legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply. A total of 385 food samples of fruits and vegetables were collected and analysed, out of which 266 samples were examined. Among them, 239 samples were deemed safe, while 27 were reported unsafe due to excessive pesticide residues and the presence of fungus.
