Indian Navy to commission its second nuclear submarine

The Indian Navy is set to commission its second nuclear submarine, INS Arighat, today.

The ceremony is expected to take place in the presence of top defence, national security, and military officials, according to sources from ANI.

INS Arighat, is a powerful addition to the Indian Navy and has a displacement of 6,000 tonnes. This submarine plays a vital role in the nation’s nuclear triad, enabling the launch of nuclear missiles from land, air, and sea.

As the second submarine of the Arihant-class indigenous nuclear submarines, INS Arighat will complement the existing INS Arihant, which was inducted in 2009.

The Indian Navy has successfully developed and tested long-range nuclear missiles from these submarines and is preparing to induct a third submarine in the coming years, with plans for two more by 2035-36.

Chile’s Foreign Minister to visit Mumbai

Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto Klaveren, is set to embark on a two-day visit to Mumbai today. As a major economic hub, Mumbai will be the focal point of the visit, where Minister Klaveren will meet with business leaders and regional officials.

These engagements are expected to highlight the economic importance of the Chile-India partnership and explore new opportunities in technology, energy, and trade.

Yesterday, Klaveren met with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in various sectors such as trade, investment, and cultural exchange, reflecting the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen their collaboration and achieve common objectives.

During his stay, Klaveren, accompanied by Chile’s Agriculture Minister Esteban Valenzuela also took part in the Chile-India Business (Agriculture) Summit on Wednesday.

BJP Central Election Committee’s meeting

The BJP’s central election committee is set to meet today in the national capital to discuss candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections.

The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president JP Nadda. Key leaders such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Organisation General Secretary BL Santosh, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, and state unit president Mohanlal Badoli will also be in attendance.

Voting for the 90 seats in the Haryana Assembly is scheduled for October 1, with results to be declared on October 4.

According to sources, the committee is considering both new faces and strong contenders from previous elections, with a focus on candidates with a clean image. The names will be finalised in this meeting and will undergo further review by the central election committee before being officially announced, ANI reported.

Karnataka HC hearing on MUDA site allotment scam

The Karnataka High Court is scheduled to resume hearing regarding Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s petition challenging the Governor’s sanction for his prosecution in the alleged Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment scam.

The controversy stems from Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot’s decision on August 16 to grant sanction under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

In response, Siddaramaiah moved the High Court on August 19, challenging the legality of the Governor’s order. The High Court had earlier directed the special court for people’s representatives, which was set to hear complaints against Siddaramaiah, to defer its proceedings until the next hearing.

Delhi HC to hear anticipatory bail plea of former trainee IAS Puja Khedkar

The Delhi High Court is set to hear the anticipatory bail plea of suspended trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar, after an earlier hearing was deferred by Justice Subramonium Prasad. The postponement occurred because the Delhi Police had not filed their reply on record.

Puja Khedkar, a former trainee IAS officer, is facing accusations of falsifying and misrepresenting facts in her application to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

During the previous hearing, the court directed the investigating agency not to arrest Khedkar while the matter was under review, stating that an immediate arrest was not necessary. The upcoming hearing will further address her plea for anticipatory bail.
