Claim: The video shows heavy rain in Mumbai.
Fact: The claim is misleading. The video is from 2021.

Hyderabad: Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rain for the past few days, and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts more on Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to hover between 24°C and 28°C. Amid this, a video claiming the Gateway of India has been flooded is going viral.

An X user shared the video with the hashtag #MumbaiRains.

Fact Check:

NewsMeter found that the claim is misleading. The video in question is from 2021.

A reverse image search traced the video back to a report by News 18 titled “Gateway of India Thrashed by Waves amid Cyclone Tauktae in Viral Video Leave Netizens Stunned” dated 18th May 2021.

The report detailed how the Gateway of India was flooded by strong waves from the Arabian Sea during Cyclone Tauktae, which caused significant damage and resulted in six deaths.

The visuals in the report match the viral video.

Through a keyword search, we found a video on CNN-News18’s YouTube channel titled “Maharashtra: Water Flooding Around Gateway Of India & Hotel Taj As Cyclone Tauktae Wrecks Havoc.”

The 15-second video confirmed the flooding was caused by a cyclonic storm with winds gusting up to 185 km per hour, as reported by the IMD.

NewsMeter has also previously debunked similar misleading claims where old videos of the Mumbai floods were shared as footage of recent rains.

Hence, the claim that the video shows recent heavy rain in Mumbai is misleading. The video is from 2021 and depicts the aftermath of Cyclone Tauktae.
