Ex-Army man convicted and sentenced by NIA Lucknow court in Pak espionage case

New Delhi: An NIA Special Court in Lucknow convicted and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment a former Indian Army personnel from Hapur district in a Pakistan-operated espionage case on Wednesday.

Saurabh Sharma has been sentenced to varying sentences, with a maximum jail term of 5 years, and slapped a fine under different sections of IPC, UA (P) Act and the Official Secrets Act. All sentences will run concurrently.

The ex-Army personnel was arrested, along with another accused Anas Yakub Giteli, a resident of Gujarat, on January 8, 2021. The NIA had taken over the case from ATS, UP, and re-registered the case on February 5, 2021. The anti-terror agency had subsequently chargesheeted the two accused.

According to the probe, Sharma, who was a signalman in the Indian Army, was tricked into the spying racket by a pseudonymous entity operated by Defence/ISI agents of Pakistan. Sharma disclosed restricted and confidential information about the Indian Army to a pseudo entity named ‘Neha Sharma’.

He leaked sensitive information about the Indian military installations. He had received money from different sources, including Pakistani sources and also from Giteli, for sharing the confidential information.
